I don't always share the story of what inspired this medium, or even an individual piece but this one hits a bit different. My last trip to Miami, though I made some beautiful art with amazing people, didn't quite turn out like l'd anticipated. It was wet. Like tropical depression wet, for a majority of the time. As per my usual, I was staying in a little boutique Art Deco hotel on Ocean Drive in South Beach, right next door to the infamous Colony Hotel where Scarface filmed the quintessential chainsaw scene (last image is me in front of the very staircase) and, as legend dictates, the Rat Pack hung their hats there while slumming it from time to time.
One rainy afternoon, smoking behind the hotel, I came across the most beautiful colors. Very old glass tiles embedded in layers of dirt alongside the alley.
Evidently the original tiles from the 40's-60's had been replaced some years ago and the remnants sat untouched until I came to find them. I spent hours digging and cleaning them up, mailed them home and decided on a sculpture concept for an upcoming piece. As I sat there tediously laying out every single piece, my mind was filled with daydreams of Miami noir of the past. Of politicians and pirates.... special thanks to Ally for letting me take the mold and entertaining another crazy art concept.
Antique glass tiles, Hydrocal plaster, concrete, copper
